The Daily Meal - 101 Best Wineries in America, Summer 2015

65. Keuka Lake Vineyards

This small vineyard in the Finger Lakes region of New York benefits from its proximity to the lakes that give the region its name, enjoying a longer growing season due to the water's retained summer heat as well as its moderation of the very cold winters. This vineyard, under the stewardship of winemakers Staci Nugent and Katey Larwood, sells its grapes and also produces some impressive, critically acclaimed wines, such as the 2012 Finger Lakes Dry Falling Man Vineyard Riesling, and several expressions of the grapefruity French-American hybrid grape vignoles. On the red wine side, Keuka Lake is starting to make a very good case for Finger Lakes cabernet franc.

This small vineyard in the Finger Lakes region of New York benefits from its proximity to the lakes that give the region its name, enjoying a longer growing season due to the water's retained summer heat as well as its moderation of the very cold winters. This vineyard, ... produces some impressive, critically acclaimed wines, such as the 2010 and 2011 Finger Lakes Dry Falling Man Vineyard Rieslings. Keuka Lake also produces a gently dry, very drinkable Vignoles. During season, locals and guests may be invited to help hand-harvest the grapes.

The New York Cork Report - Lenn Thompson January 22, 2015

Enter Keuka Lake Vineyards 2014 Leon Millot Nouveau ($18). Keuka Lake Vineyards has a bit of a cult following for it's non-nouveau Leon Millot - an inky dark, chewy red unlike many from the Finger Lakes. On the other hand, this nouveau is soft and fruity, with red cherry note and just a little little cassis. There is a faintly floral quality that offers some higher tones and a little complexity. Though not made via carbonic maceration, you still get the punchy fruit and soft mouth-feel that remind you of that technique. Like most nouveau wines, this isn't a wine to carefully consider or decipher. It's a wine that you drink, ideally with a meal, and simply enjoy.

Wine Spectator, November 30, 2014, James Molesworth

91 Keuka Lake Vineyards Riesling Finger lakes TBA Late Harvest Select Lucie Vineyard 2011 ... Intense, with a musky edge giving way to date, dried apricot, roasted peach and clove notes. Offers a thick mouth-coating feel with golden raisin and quince paste flavors holding the finish. Shows mature elements already, but the density and sweetness will let this last in the cellar. Drink now through 2017.

FingerLakesWine.Info, October 2014

After tasting so many tame, polite, cookie-cutter Rieslings from the 2013 vintage, it was a pleasure to drink the Keuka Lake Vineyards "Evergreen Lek Vineyard" Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2013 $25 [Very Good+]. Simply put, this is a bold wine with exotic aromas. Interesting and distinctive, it works very nicely with full-flavored food. Try it with Chicken in Onion-Yogurt Sauce, a knockout combination.

Light yellow in color, the nose is exotic. Dense, with aromas of fresh apples, apple cider, pear eau de vie and lime, there are hints of pine needles, marigold leaves and honey, particularly after the bottle is first opened. Unusually full-bodied for the vintage (13.8% alcohol), with a weighty mouth feel, the Evergreen Lek is very dry. Full flavors of ripe apple, lime, and salty apricot are in some ways reminiscent of the big salty peach flavors of the Rheingau, but here the emphasis is on apples. The salty mineral notes give the wine a mouthwatering character and make it very food friendly. The finish is dense and muscular, with a salty/lemony tang and lingering apricot notes.

For those seeking dry-style Rieslings with little perceivable residual sugar, the Finger Lakes offer a number of excellent options from producers... Keuka Lake Vineyards's Rieslings stand out in a line-up for their intensely rich, fleshy grapefruit and mineral tones. "The dry style brings out the real characteristics of the soil and fruit in our wines," Goldman says. "Plus we make our wines to drink wines with food."

While his wines are remarkably complex, when asked about his winemaking philosophy, Goldman insists, "It's all about benign neglect." The wines that he and consulting winemaker Staci Nugent create are "wines made in the vineyard," he says. "We focus on getting the best quality fruit, and then we wait. We don't get impatient. The winemaker's principle job is to make sure that these grapes get the best possible treatment."

Wine Spectator, James Molesworth, Dec 28, 2009

"I give the edge to the Goldman Vineyard bottling, for its extra precision and enticing jasmine note, though the Falling Man Vineyard and Evergreen Lek Vineyard bottlings are also very good. The winery debuted in 2005 and merits keeping an eye on."
